Competitive Team Tryout Information

How do the Girls Flag SD Competitive Teams work?
Girls Flag SD teams have two to three (2/3) team practices with their coaches per week. Tournaments are usually about one or two weekends a month.

How many players are on a team?
There are 12-20 players on each team at the high school level (7v7). In cases where we have enough at a grade level to form two teams, we will have a Purple team and a Red team. Players will be placed accordingly at the coaches’ discretion. At the club’s discretion, individual players may be moved from one team to another. As any player’s skills and commitment level improve, we may ask the player to move to a higher-level team. These changes in the roster might be necessary to assure the appropriate competitive level for each team and to insure the maximum benefit to each player.

How often do you play/travel to tournaments?
Usually about once a month, but sometimes more depending on the month and distance to the tournaments.

How does GFSD decide who coaches the teams?
Coaching assignments for existing teams will be made prior to tryouts.  GFSD reserves the right to move coaches around based on availability and need, so please understand coaching assignments are subject to change.

How soon in advance will we know the game times for a tournament?
We realize that every family has schedules outside of football and like to plan their weekend in advance. However, tournament schedules in Club Flag Football are typically not set until the Thursday night before a tournament. Schedules are set by the tournament organizers and not by us, unless it is a Girls Flag SD-sponsored event. We send out schedules as soon as we get them to give our families as much notice as we can. Please know that some scheduled dates can/will change due to changes set by the tournament host which are out of our control.

Do you play in out-of-town tournaments that require hotel stay?
Some of our tournaments will be local. However, we will play in out of town tournaments in Texas, Arizona, and Las Vegas. Hotel stay is recommended. We often negotiate a group rate for rooms and airline tickets.

What happens next after my daughter makes the team?
If your daughter makes a team, Girls Flag SD will contact you and set up a team meeting to introduce your entire team and answer any questions you may have. This will be done within the first week of practice. We will announce teams no later than 72 hours after the final tryout.

When will they practice?
All teams practice at least twice a week. Youth teams normally practice on Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday but other day combinations may occur. Potential practice times are 4:00-5:30, 5:30-7:00  and 7:00-8:30pm with the younger teams generally practicing in the earlier time slots. Specific practice times are determined after tryouts.

At the club’s discretion, individual players may be moved from one team to another. As any player’s skills and commitment level improve, we may ask the player to move to a higher-level team. These changes in the roster might be necessary to assure the appropriate competitive level for each team and to insure the maximum benefit to each player.

Playing Time
Club policy states that tuition goes towards practices, equipment, coaching, administration, and training, NOT GAME PLAYING TIME.
Common Club Motto: “We pay to practice and work hard to play!”

Are uniforms and other gear included in the monthly cost?
Uniforms are separate and not included in the monthly fee as most players are returning. We only require players to purchase new uniforms if they do not have the current Girls Flag SD club uniforms.

Can we drop out if it’s not for us?
We ask that every player make a commitment they plan to honor for at least the entire 3-month session. Pulling out of the program mid-session is disruptive to the program and the team process. After one session ends and before the next one begins, each player will be asked to recommit for that upcoming session. This would be the point at which a player can move on to pursue other interests if she so chooses.
